Summary

If your planet has been destroyed to make way for a new hyperspace bypass, your best friend turns out to be from a small planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse (and not Guilford, as you'd thought), and you find yourself in the company of a two-headed man who also happens to be the president of the galaxy, and a beautiful girl you utterly failed to connect with at a party in a city that no longer exists。。。you probably shouldn't be surprised to find yourself having breakfast at Milliways, the Restaurant at the end of the Universe。。。

‘If you’ve done six impossible things this morning, why not round it off with breakfast at Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe?’ The restaurant at the universe is a restaurant, well, located not-so-precisely at the end of the universe。  Here, the concept of time is irrelevant, because every guests came, or rather, will have come, literally from various timeline, from every part of the universe, to experience the sensation of dining at the end of time。  But you see, th ‘If you’ve done six impossible things this morning, why not round it off with breakfast at Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe?’ The restaurant at the universe is a restaurant, well, located not-so-precisely at the end of the universe。  Here, the concept of time is irrelevant, because every guests came, or rather, will have come, literally from various timeline, from every part of the universe, to experience the sensation of dining at the end of time。  But you see, the universe never truly ended at this place, the restaurant practically 'living' at the edge of apocalypse, repeating the same event over and over again。  All there was was the endless repetition of the final moment, as the restaurant rocked slowly forward over the brink of time’s furthest edge – and back again。 Well at least that's how I summarized it (some things might be wrong because english is my second language)。  So, anyway, the event from this book proceeded directly from the end of book one, The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy。  In the introduction, the Heart of Gold was attacked by the Vogon's fleet and eventually demolished, left no signs of life。  Or so it seemed。  In short, their journey continues from here。 In the first half we followed Zaphod Beeblebrox who was being separated from his companions after the Vogon's raid and found himself in a situation in which he was wanted by many parties, not only because he stole the Heart of Gold but also for the things he was about to do, in which he couldn't remember what, because his old self locked his memory and ruined his own brain so that he, the future self, will not know his plans。 For me, as unique as Zaphod was, Arthur and Ford's antics from the first book was much funnier and more entertaining, that's why Zaphod's solo chapters didn't really entertain me。 And the reason behind the Zaphod hunts was never really explained so I guess it kind of useless? We'll see if we get the answer in the next book。On the other side, I really enjoyed the further intergalactical travels because once again the author never failed to amused me of his comical alien worlds, so I think this book is a really great continuation to the first book and overall slightly better (because THGTG is already a banger, duh)。  And also, (view spoiler)[the ruler of the universe rules the universe inside of a shack in the middle of knowhere。  The ruler of the universe is Thanos (hide spoiler)]。 Joking HAHA <:)。OH, I almost forgot MARVIN。  He literally stole the show, I really like hearing (reading?) this gloomy, depressing robot speaks。  Most of his lines are pure gold。 He cracked me up every time he opened his mouth。 "Marvin, we’ve got a job for you。" Marvin trudged towards them。  "I won’t enjoy it," he said。 "Yes you will," enthused Zaphod, "there’s a whole new life stretching out ahead of you。""Oh, not another one," groaned Marvin。 。。。more

So, I think this is the funniest of the “trilogy”。 I’ve read this several times, and, more than once, have been in tears laughing at the section on verb tenses。 It’s just so silly!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Kept thinking this would become less repetitive as it went on, but man was I wrong。 Couldn’t fully read the ending。 Dialogue was sloppy and useless even though the story started out as engaging it dragged on and should’ve ended when they took Hotblack Desiato’s ship。

by no means is this a bad sequel in any way, if anything, it’s a fantastic sequel for the series but i couldn’t find myself to love it the same way i love the first one。 loved the conversation with the ruler of the universe and arthur and ford with the rocks at the end。 still the same level of witty comedy and inventiveness but it also had some of the slowest scenes out of the two books to me which held it back。 definitely worthwhile if you’ve only read the first one though8。0/10

I was going to give this three stars, but the ending was so good that it got bumped up to four。 Overall, I enjoyed the book。 Zaphod's point of view is not as much fun as Arthur's, which accounts for the initial drop in rating compared to the first book。 I was going to give this three stars, but the ending was so good that it got bumped up to four。 Overall, I enjoyed the book。 Zaphod's point of view is not as much fun as Arthur's, which accounts for the initial drop in rating compared to the first book。 。。。more

In reading this I was worried that Douglas Adams may not live up to the first amazing book of this series, but he did, and more。I am in awe of how Adams works language。 It's just a joy to read。 I didn't stop laughing nearly the entire time reading this。 So many random moments like lifts that talk back, mistakes with contraception and time machines and other random, random things。The ending just kinda fizzled off and left me wanting to know what happens next - not so much a cliff hanger but defin In reading this I was worried that Douglas Adams may not live up to the first amazing book of this series, but he did, and more。I am in awe of how Adams works language。 It's just a joy to read。 I didn't stop laughing nearly the entire time reading this。 So many random moments like lifts that talk back, mistakes with contraception and time machines and other random, random things。The ending just kinda fizzled off and left me wanting to know what happens next - not so much a cliff hanger but definitely not a proper "finish"。My only fault with this book is that I remember absolutely no names of anything as they are all so random and complicated that it boggles my mind to even pronounce and spell them never mind actually recall them (Apart from Marvin, Arthur, Trillian & Ford - of course!) 。。。more

Ik vond het eerste boek veel beter en leuker eigenlijk。 Ik weet niet of het aan mij lag maar ik vond het verhaal wat saaier en de humor minder leuk。 Iets te veel random=funny humor ofzo。

What do you get if you read this book? You'll know Arthur played some scrabble with some ape-men in a pre historic world。Regarding Audible's audio book: Martin Freeman's narration: just like a hot cup of tea made by the Heart of Gold after consulting the history of whole history of tea - brilliant! Adams fits an insane amount of action and adventure into less than 200 pages。 My mind whirs trying to remember all the crazy shit that happens。 I also feel like this book packs more satire/wit into it than the first one。 I love how Adams turns great existential questions into something that’s part nonchalant humor and part critical insight。 It’s mind-bending to read because the writing seems simple/easy but, in reality, is uniquely genius。 The only thing missing is my own capacity to grasp all t Adams fits an insane amount of action and adventure into less than 200 pages。 My mind whirs trying to remember all the crazy shit that happens。 I also feel like this book packs more satire/wit into it than the first one。 I love how Adams turns great existential questions into something that’s part nonchalant humor and part critical insight。 It’s mind-bending to read because the writing seems simple/easy but, in reality, is uniquely genius。 The only thing missing is my own capacity to grasp all the layers of cleverness in the writing, so I didn’t understand certain ideas/punchlines。 But I’m quite satisfied with what I did get。 。。。more

I never had so much fun listening to an audiobook。 Hilarious narration! Martin Freeman has a blast。 But I will buy and read the book because I want to underline some sentences for posterity。 😇The book is highly recommended for anyone who wishes to laugh out loud while picking up a few philosophical gems。

What an outstanding book! Few things that are really good here -- the ability of the author to very quickly convey complex scientific ideas in a humorous, satirical fashion - the ideas being explored (e。g。 the restaurant at the end of the universe) - the philosophical depth in some cases (who rules the universe?) - characters are entertaining as ever- comedyI tore through the book quickly, not a big deal though, since the book isn’t that large。 Will read the next installment soon。

This book is a delightful continuation of brilliant nonsense。 It is no better or worse than the first in the set, plot-wise (not that there is much of a plot to compare…) however, I feel like I appreciated Adam’s humour more in this book than the last。 The book is so much better when you let go the expectations of any sort of reliable plot! I felt that the foreword by Terry Jones was well-worded and did a good job introducing the non-plot and ideas of the author。 I liked Adam’s quirky view of ti This book is a delightful continuation of brilliant nonsense。 It is no better or worse than the first in the set, plot-wise (not that there is much of a plot to compare…) however, I feel like I appreciated Adam’s humour more in this book than the last。 The book is so much better when you let go the expectations of any sort of reliable plot! I felt that the foreword by Terry Jones was well-worded and did a good job introducing the non-plot and ideas of the author。 I liked Adam’s quirky view of time travel。 The discussion on the main problem of time travel being a grammar issue (the struggle to use correct tenses) and less of actually becoming one’s own parent or changing history was memorable。 I also liked the Guide’s definitions of the universe and how it states the population is none because if the universe is infinite then anything definite over infinity is zero。 So we are all just products of our imagination, essentially。 Neat view。 。。。more
